Commonly Overlooked Areas in Skincare

When it comes to skincare, many of us focus primarily on our face, perhaps extending our attention to our hands and feet. However, several areas of the body often get neglected in our skincare routines.

Neck and Chest

The skin on our neck and chest is delicate and prone to showing signs of ageing, yet it’s often forgotten in skincare routines. To care for these areas, extend your facial skincare products, such as moisturizers and sunscreen, down to your neck and chest. Gently massage in upward motions to promote circulation and prevent sagging. Consider using targeted serums that address specific concerns like wrinkles or discolouration.

Ears

Ears are exposed to the elements and can easily become dry or irritated. Include your ears in your skincare routine by applying moisturizer or sunscreen, especially if you have piercings. Don’t forget to gently cleanse behind your ears to remove dirt and buildup.

Lips

While many people use lip balm, lips are often neglected in comprehensive skincare routines. Exfoliate your lips regularly to remove dead skin cells, and follow up with a nourishing lip balm or treatment. Protect your lips from sun damage by using lip balms with SPF.

Hands

Our hands are constantly exposed to environmental stressors and frequent washing, leading to dryness and premature ageing. Apply hand cream regularly throughout the day, especially after washing. Use a richer cream at night and wear gloves to lock in moisture. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the backs of your hands to prevent sunspots and skin cancer.

Elbows and Knees

Elbows and knees have thicker skin and tend to be drier due to fewer oil glands. Exfoliate these areas regularly to remove dead skin cells and follow up with a hydrating lotion or cream. Consider using products containing ingredients like shea butter or ceramides to keep these areas soft and supple.

Feet

Our feet carry us through the day but often receive minimal attention in our skincare routines. Treat your feet to regular exfoliation using a pumice stone or foot scrub to remove calluses and rough patches. Moisturize feet daily, paying special attention to heels and soles. Trim toenails straight across to prevent ingrown nails, and wear moisture-wicking socks to prevent fungal infections.

Scalp

The scalp is an extension of the skin and requires proper care to maintain a healthy environment for hair growth. Use a gentle shampoo that suits your scalp type and avoid harsh ingredients that can cause dryness or irritation. Regularly massage your scalp to improve circulation and distribute natural oils. Consider using scalp treatments or oils to address specific concerns like dandruff or dryness.

Underarms

Underarms can be sensitive and prone to irritation from shaving or deodorants. Choose gentle, non-irritating products and allow the skin to recover between shaves. Exfoliate underarms regularly to prevent ingrown hairs and apply soothing products after hair removal.

Incorporating these overlooked areas into your skincare routine can contribute to healthier, more radiant skin from head to toe. Remember, skincare is not just about the face—every part of your body deserves attention and care. By adopting a holistic approach to skincare, you can achieve overall skin health and feel confident in your skin’s appearance and condition.
